Tumblr API Feature Requests
I noticed a number of posts on my Tumblr Dashboard over the last few weeks regarding new features people would like added to the site. The team working on Tumblr is faced with the challenge of addressing those requests while trying to maintain the simple, clean interface that drew many of us to Tumblr in the first place. That’s not an easy balancing act. David and Marco have done an...

Yahoo! Q4 Earnings Fall 23% →
It pains me to see Yahoo! struggling with little to no sign of recovery. I grew up with Yahoo! I invested 3 1/2 years of my career as an employee. The people I met there are the brightest, hardest working, and most friendly folks I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Now 1,000 of my former co-workers are going to loose their job. The solution to Yahoo!’s problems seems...

marco: I’m ready to direct some traffic to my little side project, Instapaper. I’ve been using it for months and couldn’t live without it now. Here’s the basic premise: You come across substantial news or blog articles that you want to read, but don’t have time at the moment. You need something to read while sitting on a bus, waiting in a line, or bored in front of a computer. Instapaper...
Developer API's: Cart Before The Horse
One of the things I’m considering as I plan the development of the recommendation site I’m working on is the idea of developing an API before we build the front-end experience. I think that imposes a good discipline on developers. API’s shouldn’t be an afterthought. They should be core to the service we’re creating. As Tim O’Reiley says, data is the...

To scroll on an iPhone, you drag your fingers in an upward motion along the screen. To scroll on a MacBook, you drag your fingers in a downward motion along the trackpad. I find myself confusing the two.

This Firefox plugin creates stunning slideshows for Flickr, Facebook, and a number of other photos sites: The interactive “3D Wall” lets you effortlessly drag, click, and zoom your way around a wall of pictures for an extraordinary, full-screen viewing experience. Visually, the results are stunning. This Firefox plugin is going to find a lot of...

Reblog Plugin For Wordpress / MoveableType
All blogs should offer a reblog feature. Fred Wilson wrote a post on Newcritics about the power of the Tumblr reblog button. You should click through and read it. I agree with Fred that reblogging is an interesting development for media sharing on the web. This comment in particular caught my attention: You have to have a tumblog on Tumblr to be able to use the reblog button. Which limits its...
Consulting Opportunities?
I’m looking for some consulting opportunities to keep me busy till the business I’m working on gets off the ground. If you know of any projects that might be a good fit or have suggestions in terms of resources for finding part-time opportunities aside from Craigslist, shoot me an email (joe AT joelaz DOT com). I’ve never done the freelance thing, so any information you can...
Modules, by endemic project who writes: “I asked all my neighbours if I could connect my MIDI keyboard with their lightbulbs in each appartment. After that, I plaid my music while my camera was filming the facade of the building. It’s was as simple as that. Satisfied?”
More MyBlogLog Geekiness I threw together another simple demo of the new MyBlogLog API. This one shows links and screenshots for websites authored by recent visitors to a website (Fred Wilson’s blog in this example since I don’t yet use MBL on this site). It’s similar in concept to a blogroll, but this one updates automatically throughout the day with links to your visitors...
Question!
Doree asks: How do I stop “following” someone on Tumblr? — doree Answer!: In the top right corner of your Tumblr Dashboard you’ll see a button with a silhouette of a person and a number representing how many people you’re following. Click on that to see a list of all the people you’re following. Then, hover your mouse over the person you would like to remove and...
MyBlogLog API: First Impressions
Thanks to Ian, Kent, and the rest of the MyBlogLog team, I got my hands on a beta invite for the MyBlogLog API earlier today. It’s easy to use and has interesting potential to connect a bunch of popular services from across the web in an open, social way (as if those buzzwords weren’t getting enough play these days). I put together a crude example of what you can do with it. If you...
Last.fm & Free Music Syndication
Last.fm’s announcement today got me thinking about a new model for legal music sharing on the web. As I understand it, Last.fm has agreements in place with all the major labels to offer their site visitors 3 free listens for any song. After 3 plays, the listener must either buy an MP3 or purchase Last.fm’s soon-to-launch subscription service in order to play the track again. ...

Last.fm Announcement: Free On-Demand Music... →
Last.fm launched a free, on-demand music service. They have deals with all 4 major labels to offer free, streamable, ad-supported music. However, each song can only be played 3 times. For continuous play, you’ll need to order their upcoming subscription service. Sounds like an interesting model. Hat tip to philipp for posting a link to the official announcement.
Yahoo, Please Don't Put Up a Fight →
Umair subtly asks Yahoo! to roll over and die. Umair cracks me up. As always, he has some good points, but I’m still hanging on to hope for my friends at Yahoo! Jerry needs to shake things up a lot more than he has been.
MyBlogLog API Could Be A Game Changer
Last week, Yahoo! quietly announced a private beta for the new MyBlogLog API. I missed the story till today when I read about it from Marshall Kirkpatrick. Still, even after reading Marshall’s post, the significance of this announcement wasn’t immediately obvious to me. I mistakenly assumed the API would basically provide the same information as the MyBlogLog blog widget, but allow...

A while ago, Taylor asked: Is it such a weird thought to get joy from other peoples successes? Somebody must know one! — gtmcknight According to Wikipedia, “Mudita is a Buddhist word meaning rejoicing in others’ good fortune.” I came across this today and recalled Taylor’s question. Leave it to the Buddhists.

FlickrFan & Copyright, a Legal Question
I attended Dave Winer’s FlickrFan talk at Yahoo! Brickhouse last night and inadvertently opened a can of worms towards the end of the Q&A session by asking what I thought was a reasonable question on copyright. FlickrFan’s main feature is a screensaver that automatically updates based on RSS feeds containing photos from Flickr, the Associate Press, and any other feed source with...
