Requiem For A Day Off

You probably thought Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was a light-hearted comedy.  You thought wrong. (via Cal)

Chromeo - Needy Girl

I have a hard time describing music in a way that captures the unique sound of a particular band or song.  What’s the right word to describe this track?  Electrofunk?  Whatever the genre, it’s amazing.  I found the clip via my friend Beach’s FriendFeed.  On a personal note, I used to own the same cheesy 80’s Sequential synthesizer that they show briefly towards the end of the video (3:44).

Question for Tom Waits: What's scary to you?

Waits’ response (via):

  1. A dead man in the back seat of a car with a fly crawling on his eyeball.
  2. Turbulence on any airline.
  3. Sirens and searchlights combined.
  4. Gunfire at night in bad neighbourhoods.
  5. Car motor turning over but not starting, it’s getting dark and starting to rain.
  6. Jail door closing.
  7. Going around a sharp curve on the Pacific Coast Highway and the driver of your car has had a heart attack and died, and you’re in the back seat.
  8. You are delivering mail and you are confronted with a Dobermann with rabies growling low and showing teeth… you have no dog bones and he wants to bite your ass off.
  9. In a movie… which wire do you cut to stop the time bomb, the green or the blue?
  10. McCain will win.
  11. Germans with sub-machine guns.
  12. Officers, in offices, being official.
  13. You fell through the ice in the creek and it carried you downstream, and now as you surface you realise there’s a roof of ice.

Well said, Tom.  Well said.

Would You Pay $715 for $630 in Cash?

There is a buy-it-now listing on eBay today where the seller is offering $630 in cash, which he will send electronically to the buyer through PayPal.  The current price for this listing is $715.  Why would someone pay $715 for $630 in cash?  Well, you may have heard that Microsoft recently launched a ridiculous “cash back” promotion in the hopes of bribing Google customers to switch to Microsoft’s search engine, Live.com.  Seems some resourceful people found a loophole in the system.  Apparently, you can get a 10-35% cash back reward for all buy-it-now eBay purchases if you access the eBay listing through Live Search.  So, people are simply selling cash and arbitraging the cash back reward.  Your move, Ballmer.

Can you Digg it?

“I never could understand why I could get married and she couldn’t,” said Patricia Lyon, 77, sister of the bride. “I’m so happy to be here today, to see them have their chance.” (via)
Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon made history yesterday when the couple of 55 years became the first same-sex couple in San Francisco to be declared “spouses for life.”  Why anyone would take issue with this, gay or straight, is beyond me.  Any proclamation of love is good in my book.  I’m proud of my town today.
