Artist Jim Denevan (a Bay Area local) makes stunning, large-scale drawings in sand using just rakes and sticks.  This month, he completed his largest work yet, a 3-mile wide series of circles sketched in a dry lake bed in Nevada.  You really need to see the other photos in order to appreciate the massive scale of this thing.
