I knew these three bands were popular on Tumblr, but I’m fascinated to see that their mentions largely rise and fall together. I suppose some of it could be due to overall rises and falls in posting volumes from day to day, but I doubt that explains all of it.

Marc, it looks like the big spikes in this graph coincide with the days that my automated Last.fm Tumblr feed updated for all the people who import their favorite artists into Tumblr each week. I have no idea how many people use the feed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they skew trend data for all band names.

Somewhat related, why doesn’t Tumblr search show any audio posts?

Tumblr SEO Traffic Tip

The other day when I was futzing with my Tumblr theme, I made a change to the way my page titles are generated for Google and other search engines. By default, most Tumblr themes display page titles as a combination of blog name and post name in that order. For example, this post would typically appear in Google as…

If you’re comfortable editing your theme, you can easily switch it to read like this instead…

Tumblr SEO Traffic Tip - Joe Lazarus

Unless you’re internet famous, I’m guessing the latter example drives more traffic since it leads with the topic the person searched on as opposed to whatever name you gave to your blog. Give it a shot if you care about search engine traffic. I would provide the exact code change, but it might vary by theme and I wouldn’t want to cause any problems. Most likely the people who read this far can figure it out themselves given the nerd factor of this post.

Willie Nelson - The Maker

I try to post a photo with each song I upload to Tumblr. I usually search Flickr for a Creative Commons image that I feel enhances the song. Sadly, you can’t see the photo if you’re reading my posts through the Tumblr Dashboard. I think they add to the audio experience. This shot is a close-up of Willie Nelson’s guitar, which is a tattered thing of beauty. Come have a look.
